Background to Kiltimagh / Knock United Football Club

Kiltimagh / Knock United is an amalgamation of two clubs, Knock United and Kiltimagh Athletic Football Clubs. The amalgamation took place in January 2002. Knock United had been in existence for ten years and Kiltimagh Athletic for four years. Both had achieved significant success during this time.

Knock United

Knock United was formed in 1993 and competed in the Mayo reserve league for two years before winning it in 1994. By 1996 the A team were promoted to division one and the club had an additional team in the reserve league.

  • 1995 An underage structure was set up in with an U12 team.

  • 1996 U12 team was promoted to the premier league which they won.

  • 1997, U13 and U14 teams were established – U14 reached the Connacht Cup semi final, to be beaten by Mervue United 1 –0.

  • 1997 ladies teams were established and they won the U15 Mayo Community Games Final

  • 1998 there was an U16 team in place and they won their  divisional cup.

  • 1998 the U14 team completed their season as cup winners and runners up to Castlebar Celtic in the League.

  • 1999 the U15 team went to the last 6 in the SFAI Cup being narrowly beaten by Wexford Albion.

  • 1999 Senior Ladies win the Connacht Cup but were beaten by Lifford, Ennis in the All Ireland Semi Final 1-0.

  • 1999 Three of the ladies team get Irish trials.

  • 2000 Luke Byrne, our player now with Leeds United, emerges, and makes Irish U16 Squad.

Kiltimagh Athletic

Kiltimagh Athletic was formed in 1998. From the beginning the Club had a strong and well-organised panel. In three seasons the club won two Divisional Cups, and were promoted once, just narrowly missing out on promotion a second time.

There were a number of individual success stories, with a player signing for Galway United and another player winning the Divisional Player of the Year Award.

All of this was achieved by a Club with no pitch or training ground with players travelling to a rented pitch near Ballinlough, Co. Roscommon , 20 miles away, to play home games. In January 2002, after much planning, Knock United and Kiltimagh Athletic were amalgamated.

Achievements Post Amalgamation:

  • Senior Ladies win two league titles

  • U12 Divisional titles and in 2004 reached last 8 in SFAI Cup at which stage they were bet by Arlington.

  • U12s reached last 16 of SFAI Cup in 2005

  • Three players get trials at Southhampton and one player at Newcastle.

  • 2006 U14s reach semi finals of SFAI Cup.

  • 2006 Players get called to trials at Derby and Southhampton, and call back to Southhampton.
